Statement by the Government of Guyana

Human Rights Day 2025

Theme: Our Everyday Essentials”

Today, December 10, 2025, Guyana joins the rest of the international community in celebrating Human Rights Day. This 2025 observance, under the theme "Our Everyday Essentials”, marks seventy-seven years since the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on December 10, 1948.

At its adoption, the UDHR established for the first time the inalienable human rights to be universally recognised and protected, inspiring and paving the way for over seventy human rights treaties, which are now applied on a permanent basis at the global and regional levels. The UDHR's legacy is evident in the expanding network of human rights instruments to which an increasing number of States have subscribed. It can also be observed in the participation of UN Member States in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) conducted under the auspices of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

This year, Guyana had opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to human rights during our participation in the fourth iteration of the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva. The occasion allowed for a presentation of our achievements in this important sphere as well as the challenges still to be overcome to enable our people to realise their highest aspirations.

Human rights speak to the essential elements of our humanity, life, liberty, identity, dignity, equality, safety and security, opportunity. They embody the freedoms to which every human being is inherently entitled, without exception or distinction. It is incumbent on states to ensure the fullest enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by all peoples through the promotion and protection of these rights.

On this Human Rights Day 2025, the Government of Guyana reiterates its commitment to bridge the gap between human rights principles and the daily lived experiences of the Guyanese people. We will continue our work to raise awareness, inspire confidence, and promote collective action by all stakeholders to ensure that no one is denied or left behind.
