Bilateral Affairs Department
The Bilateral Affairs Department is charged with advancing Guyana’s foreign policy objectives with respect to the establishment, conduct and maintenance of Guyana’s bilateral relations. The Department is responsible for Guyana’s relations with countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania/Pacific region.
The Bilateral Affairs Department works closely with Guyana’s Diplomatic and Consular Missions abroad and with the resident and non-resident foreign diplomatic Missions accredited to Guyana with a view to ensuring the unfettered interaction and collaboration between Guyana and our bilateral partners.
The objectives of the Bilateral Department are the following:
- Political Relations: To develop, maintain and enhance relations with strategic countries worldwide.
- Economic and Social Relations: To promote the economic and social development of Guyana through partnerships with states in those regions for which we are responsible.
- Negotiation of Agreements: To negotiate, conclude and pursue the implementation of Bilateral Agreements in a number of areas including Visa Waivers, Air Services, Double Taxation and Promotion and Protection of Investments, among others.
- New Relations: To pursue the establishment of diplomatic relations with States within the assigned geographical locations as a means of enhancing Guyana’s partnerships around the world and to create opportunities for collaboration in areas of interest to the country’s development priorities.
- Support to other Government Ministries and Agencies: To provide support to others departments, as well as government Ministries and Agencies in the execution of their duties, including providing briefs and other information.
