AMBASSADOR SAMUEL HINDS RECEIVES COURTESY CALL FROM ASSISTANT SG OF OAG

Courtesy call paid on Ambassador Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary General, of the OAS by Ambassador Samuel Hinds, O.E concerning preparations for the Fifth Annual Inter-American Week for People of African Descent in The Americas, March 21-25, 2022

On March 17, 2022 His Excellency Samuel Hinds, O.E Ambassador of Guyana to the United States of America and Permanent Representative of Guyana to the Organization to the American States, paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary General, of the Organization of American States, concerning preparations for the Fifth Annual Inter-American Week for Peoples of African Descent in the Americas, scheduled for March 21-25, 2022. Ambassador Hinds handed over a monetary donation in the amount of US$1,000 on behalf of the Government of Guyana to the commemoration of the Inter-American Week for Peoples of African Descent and the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

In his remarks Permanent Representative Samuel Hinds stated that the Week offers the opportunity for Member States of the OAS and indeed all individuals to reflect on the history and often overlooked contributions of Peoples of African Descent in this Hemisphere. Ambassador Hinds urged “Let us continue working to bring an early end to the adverse legacy of slavery”.

In his response, Ambassador Nestor Mendez expressed appreciation for Guyana’s contribution towards the Inter-American Week for Peoples of African Descent. He acknowledged that it was the contributions from Member States that enabled the OAS to place emphasis on observing this particular event which is important for societies in the Hemisphere. Ambassador Mendez expressed the hope that Guyana’s generosity would be followed by other OAS Member States.
