Thank you, Mr. President,

I express appreciation to the delegation of Algeria for requesting this meeting. I also thank Mr. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Dr. Younes Al-Khatib, President of the Palestine Red

Crescent Society, for their sobering briefings.

At the outset, Guyana offers its sincere condolences to the UN and the PRCS on the loss of staffers in Gaza and to the families of all those who recently died under very tragic circumstances.

Mr. President,

1. I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the A3+ members, Algeria, Guyana, Somalia, and my own country, Sierra Leone.

2. We thank Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, for his comprehensive and valuable briefing.

3. We also take note of the contribution of Ms. Abiola Akiyode Afolabi, Founding Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center.

At the outset, I congratulate you on France’s assumption of the Presidency and commend Denmark for a successful Presidency in the month of March.

I thank ASG Msuya and USG Michaud for the briefings and reiterate Guyana’s gratitude to you and your teams for your dedication and for the work you do to alleviate human suffering worldwide.

Mr. President,

I have the honor to deliver this statement on behalf of the members of the A3+, namely Guyana, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and my own country Algeria.

The A3+ would like to thank Special Envoy Geir Pedersen and USG Tom Flecther for their valuable briefings. We have also listened carefully to Ms. Joumana Seif .

Mr. President,
At the outset, the A3+ reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria that confronts today, grave security, humanitarian, political and economic challenges.

Madam President,

Thank you for convening today’s meeting.

I thank Assistant Secretary General Khiari for his briefing, and I take this opportunity to extend to him and the UN family our deepest condolences on the killing of the six UNOPS and UNRWA workers over the last few days.

I also commend Mr. Sharabi for his courage in sharing his experience with us today and commiserate with him on the loss of his loved ones in such tragic circumstances.

Statement delivered by H.E. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, at Security Council Open Debate on 'Advancing adaptability in United Nations peace operations: responding to new realities'

Thank you, Mr. President, Your Excellency Mr. Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

Guyana thanks Denmark for organizing this meeting. Indeed, it is most relevant as it comes at a time when UN peace operations’ efficacy is being tested in the 11 ongoing Missions around the globe. 

I also thank the Secretary-General and Mrs. Jenna Russo for their informative briefs. Your insights provide greater clarity on the issues facing peace operations and our peacekeepers.
